Jalapeno SPAM Musubi and Sweet Tamago Egg

SPAM Musubi has got to be my favorite appetizer, snack, or meal derived by the influence of hawaiian cuisine. I will never understand why some folks can’t stand the taste of spam. I think it is an amazing salty delicious bite and when created well as a SPAM musubi has a sweet, salty, umami flavor profile.

I remember on my most recent trip to Maui I had this almost every day. On the island, there is only one 7/11 and I went there everyday to see what SPAM musubi I could try next and it was absolutely amazing.

SPAM did not really become popular on the island until WWII and many were served luncheon meat in a can. It slowly became a part of the culture and the SPAM meat itself became a staple in Hawaiian cuisine. Which I can see why, it tastes amazing!

I love how this recipe combines the sweet and savory elements of SPAM. It is honestly the perfect filling bite.

This is a great recipe for on the go and if you need to eat something that is flavorful, hearty and quick.

For this recipe, I use my homemade orange teriyaki glaze to glaze the spam and it pairs perfectly with the subtle spice from the Jalapeno spam and salty flavors of the SPAM.

This recipe is special because I went searching long and hard for “JALAPENO SPAM” it is hard to come by and challenging to find depending on where you live.

Whenever I find it, I stock up on it because it is the superior SPAM out of all the SPAM’s out there in my opinion.

This tamago spam musubi will transport you to the islands of Hawaii. This is my favorite way to have it. The sweet egg along with the sweet and savory sauce and salty spam is the perfect combo!

Ingredients

Furikake Rice + SPAM

• 1 can SPAM (1 can typically makes 8 slices) 
• 4 nori sheets 
• 2 1/2 cups cooked jasmine rice
• 3 tbsp ebi furikake
• 3 tbsp nori furikake 
• 1 tsp sugar
• 1 tbsp rice vinegar 
• 1 tbsp sesame oil 

Tamago Egg Roll

• 3 eggs 
• 2 tbsp milk
• 1 tsp rice vinegar
• 1 tsp sugar 
• 1/2 tsp white pepper 
• salt to taste 

Orange Teriyaki Glaze

• Please refer to this orange glaze teriyaki (SAUCE HERE)

Instructions

Filling Instructions

1. cut your spam into 8 equal slices 
2. sear off your spam and glaze it with your orange teriyaki glaze and once cooked, set aside
3. make your tamago by whisking your eggs and layering them into a skillet 
4. tuck the left and right of the egg and gently roll it up like a roll
5. repeat this step until the egg mixture is finished 
6. to a bowl, add your hot jasmine rice and add all of your seasoning ingredients and give it a mix, set aside 

Spam Rolling Instructions

1. use a spam musubi press, I purchased one that can create two at a time.
2. Add your nori
3. place your mold on top
4. place your spam and add a little bit of glaze
5. add your egg roll on top
6. add your furikake rice
7. with the press, push it down firmly
8. tuck in the sides of the nori 
9. cut the musubi
10. serve with more teriyaki and enjoy!
